HOSTING INFORMATION

Learn to Play Ringette is designed to help associations convert interest into long-term players.

This program acts as the bridge between Come Try Ringette and the fall/winter season—giving new players the confidence, skills, and understanding they need to fully step into the sport.

Before applying to host a program, please review the information below. You will be required to complete your application prior to approval.

WHY HOST A LEARN TO PLAY PROGRAM

This is where participation becomes retention.

Associations that run Learn to Play programs see:

  • Higher transition rates into full-season registration
  • Increased player confidence and readiness
  • More engaged and informed families
  • Stronger long-term growth within their association

The goal is simple: Make new players feel prepared, welcomed, and excited to continue.

TIMELINES

Planning ahead is key to delivering a successful program.

While timelines may vary by association, the following is recommended:

10-14 weeks before program start:

  • Book facilities (minimum 2 hours including 1 hour of ice)
  • Register your program in RAMP
  • Begin initial coordination with Ringette Alberta

8-10 weeks before:

  • Secure instructors and volunteers
  • Initiate your promotion plan
  • Request promotional materials and templates

4-6 weeks before:

  • Monitor registration and engagement
  • Prepare parent information and take-home materials
  • Organize equipment and volunteers

1-2 weeks before:

  • Confirm participants and volunteers
  • Finalize logistics and on-site setup

A well-planned timeline creates a smoother experience for both families and volunteers.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

To successfully run a Learn to Play program, associations should have:

  • A Learn to Play Lead (1-2 people)
  • Greeters/registration support (2-3 people)
  • On-ice instructors and assistants (recommended ratio 1:5)
  • Dressing room support (Rule of Two applies)
  • Post-ice support for questions and registration conversion

Volunteers may take on multiple roles, but strong organization is essential for a professional and welcoming experience.

PROGRAM STRUCTURE

Learn to Play is typically delivered as a 6-8 week program that focuses on:

  • Skating fundamentals and confidence on the ice
  • Core rules and game understanding
  • Passing, shooting, and positioning basics
  • Introduction to game flow and teamwork

The emphasis is on fun, engagement, and building confidence—not competition.

PROMOTION & EQUIPMENT SUPPORT

Ringette Alberta provides templates, resources and equipment support.

EQUIPMENT SUPPORT

Many families will be new to the sport.

Associations should be prepared to:

  • Provide guidance on required equipment
  • Share local purchasing options
  • Offer loan or rental equipment where possible

Reducing barriers to entry is critical to participation.
