Wild Card Procedure - Monday, February 22, 2010

We have received some questions regarding the wild card draw procedure.  The following is an outline of how wild cards are selected by Ringette Alberta:

The current process for selecting wild cards is as follows:

1.        The number of zones competing in a given Provincial tournament is calculated.  If all eight zones are vying to attend, there will be a nine-team Provincials, with a representative from each zone, and a representative from the host association.  In this situation, there are no wild cards.

2.       If fewer than eight zones are vying to attend, there will be a maximum of eight teams in attendance at Provincials.

3.       The number of wild cards to be selected is calculated by subtracting the host and the total number of zones vying to attend from eight (the maximum number of teams).

4.       The number of chits per zone is calculated.  This number is the total number of teams vying to attend from each zone, minus one.

5.       The wild card chits are drawn.  These zones are then given the opportunity to accept or deny the wild card positions.

6.       If necessary, additional wild card chits are drawn until all wild card positions have been accepted.

Ringette Scores on Cancer (RSOC) - Monday, February 01, 2010

On behalf of Ringette Alberta, congratulations to the U of A Ringette team for their outstanding fundraising efforts!

The U of A Ringette Team hosted the first annual Ringette Scores on Cancer (RSOC) event at WEM on January 30 - 31.

A total of 12 ringette teams participated in the event which raised an astonishing $55,000 for the Cross Cancer Institute. This amount more than doubled original estimates by event organizers.

The event was structured so each player performed fundraising in order to participate in RSOC. Leading the way was 9 year old Taylor Hrynchuk from Ft. Saskatchewan who raised an incredible $6,000 in pledges for cancer research!

As part of RSOC, the U of A Ringette Team took on a media/celebrity team in an exhibition game. A jam packed crowd watched as the U of A Team ultimately claimed victory in a multi round shoot out between the two teams. The media/celebrity team included former NHL'ers, Rob Brown & Louie DeBrusk & current pro-athlete, Jimmy Quinlan of the Edmonton Rush, as well as a host of other local athletes & celebrities.
