Background

The Canada Games is a national multi-sport competition for Canadian Youth. The Canada Games have been in existence since Quebec hosted the first ever Games in 1967. Since then, the Games have been held every two years alternating between Summer and Winter competitions, similar to the Olympics.

The Games celebrate youth and sport, and contribute to the development of sport across the country. Athletes are provided with an opportunity to reach their athletic potential and pursue personal excellence while being exposed to culturally and socially stimulating experiences. The Games are intended to be the most significant sporting and cultural experience in the lives of Canada Games athletes.

Ringette in the Games

The 1991 Canada Winter Games in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island was the first time Ringette was played in the Games. After claiming gold, Alberta successfully defended their championship at the 1995 CWG hosted here in Alberta in Grande Prairie. The next trip to the Games found our athletes in Cornerbrook, Newfoundland for the 1999 CWG, where despite much effort were unable to attain hardware, finishing in fourth.  The 2003 CWG were held in Bathurst-Campbellton, New Brunswick where Team Alberta placed just short of a medal, in fourth place, for the second year in a row.  In 2007 the CWG Games were hosted in Whitehorse, Yukon where Alberta improved on their standings and took a silver medal.

The 2011 Canada Winter Games will be held in Halifax, Nova Scotia, February 11-27.

Ringette Alberta is now accepting applications for the position of Team Alberta Head Coach for the 2011 Canada Winter Games. The Head Coach will be responsible for the planning, organization and preparation of Alberta’s Canada Winter Games team.
