| Lyndsay Wheelans returns to the bench as head coach of Team Canada - Thursday, August 07, 2008Ottawa, Ontario – August 6, 2008 – Ringette Canada today announced the appointment of Lyndsay Wheelans as head coach of its National Team program. Wheelans, who was also head coach in 2007, will now work with the National Team committee to select the remaining coaching staff that will lead Team Canada in their quest for gold at the next world ringette championship being held in Finland in November 2010.
“Lyndsay is a very passionate, athlete-centered coach who is well known for her commitment to excellence and we are very fortunate to have her return as head coach for our upcoming program,” said Tamara McKernan, chair of the National Team committee. “Her focus on building athlete capability and team systems during our 2007 program has laid the groundwork for future successes and we are excited she is back to share her vision and motivation to lead Canada to gold in 2010.”
Wheelans has an outstanding track record in the game as both a player and as a coach and brings over 28 years of athletic and coaching experience to the team. She was a player on the only Canadian team to ever win two consecutive world ringette championships in 1990 and 1992, head coach for Team Canada’s gold medal win in 1996 and assistant coach when Team Canada won silver in both 2000 and 2004. Wheelans also brought the Finnish National Team to gold as head coach during the 1998 Summit Series. In 2002, Wheelans was inducted into the Ringette Canada Hall of Fame in the coaching category and was also named Ontario Female Coach of the Year. Wheelans was born in Calgary, raised in Edmonton and now lives in Toronto, Ontario where she works as a programmer analyst with the federal government.
“I am very excited and feel very privileged to be able to continue working with Team Canada,” commented Lyndsay Wheelans, Team Canada head coach. “My focus will be to build upon the strong program we had in 2007 and ensure that Team Canada emerges as the top ringette nation in the world.”
The remaining Team Canada staff will be chosen by the end of September 2008 and they will be scouting onsite at the World Club Championship being held in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario in November 2008. At that time they will also finalize their team development and scouting plans.
The overall objective of the National Team program is to promote and develop ringette at both the national and international levels. It provides an opportunity for ringette athletes, coaches, team staff, and officials to develop at the local, regional, provincial and national levels. By providing the forum to compete in national and international events, the National Team program is also an opportunity to demonstrate the skill and finesse of ringette.
Canada captured silver at the last world ringette championship after losing 5-4 in overtime to Finland. The event was held in Ottawa, Ontario in November 2007. |
